show that you care about the site, that you are generally mature, and that you are fairly knowledgeable about the game (you don't have to be good yourself but you need to understand comp-level gameplay)

as with all things there's an idea of "culture fit", mods only want to work with people they like, but if the mods reject you for something like that then the site doesn't deserve your volunteer work
