Any of you guys Hockey fans? It's super popular in America (Northeast and like Michigan/Minnesota/Dakota(s)/Wisconsin) but not really in the rest. It's also very popular in Canada and a lot of Europe.

I mostly follow the NHL (USA/Canadian league), NCAA (USA college hockey), and National Hockey (Olympics/ World Cup of Hockey). Other popular leagues include: The AHL and ECHL (minor leagues for the NHL), the CHL (Canadian Junior Hockey), the KHL (Russian Hockey League), the CIS (Canadian University Hockey), and the USHL (American hockey juniors).

I never played hockey as a kid, it was always too expensive (you have to buy all the pads+helmet+gloves+a stick+skates), and ice time is pretty expensive. I would always watch with my mom (funnily enough) because she was a big Boston Bruins fan. My dad didn't play or watch either, but he loved college hockey. He was the one who got me to be such a big Boston University Terriers fan.

There's different kinds of style of hockey besides ice, but ice is probably the most popular. There's: field hockey (mostly a women's sport, very different from actual hockey), Street hockey (played with rollerblades or sneakers and then a puck or ball), and in line hockey, basically ice hockey but in a roller rink. I've only played street with my friends, but I've always wanted to learn how to skate (and I might because my uni offers classes on ice skating and learning to play hockey).

What is the point of this thread? To get people into hockey. I love watching hockey, I'll try and watch every game on TV for my favorite team (Boston Bruins, it's hard tho with 82 regular season games+ the post season), and I go to all my Uni's hockey games. So basically, post in this thread with your Country, state, continent, province, time zone, anything, and I'll give you a few suggestions for teams to follow. This will be harder with countries besides the US and Canada, but I'll do my best.

I was close with a girl who was really into hockey once. She was ridiculously competitive and really turned me off to all Canadians in the end.

So that's why you hated Hood! You just hate canadians, not blacks

Rivals-

They don't really have many rivalries, but the obvious one is against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning have always been the better team, BUT the Panthers actually have a better record (wins/loses) against them (58 wins–37 losses–10 overtime loses –12 shootout loses). They also have this new thing called the Governor's cup, where the team with the most wins from head to head matchups against each other would get a special trophy given by the Governor.

They don't really have any other "official rivalries", but other teams in their conference are the: Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Panthers tickets are also dirt cheap, they have the cheapest tickets in the NHL. If you can afford going to games I would 100% recommend, because hockey in person is way better. If you wanna watch for free, go to https://www.reddit.com/r/NHLStreams/. Here's their schedule http://panthers.nhl.com/club/schedule.htm.

They also have weird traditions, like throwing plastic rats on the ice, and worshipping Kevin Spacey (who is a fan, and who does go to the games), and you can get a "Spacey in Space" t shirt.

I hope you end up loving the game as much as I do!

The Florida Panthers joined the NHL back in 1993, so they are a relatively new team. They have only been to the playoffs 5 times since their creation, and have never won a Stanley Cup. But things are looking good for the Panthers. Last season, even though they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, they were first in their division, and have put together a team of misfits that works really well with each other.

Aaron Ekblad - Drafted only two years ago, he became the number one defender on the Panthers. Now that he is 20, he has already made two appearances in the NHL All Star Game, won a Calder trophy (best rookie in NHL), and has two gold medals for Team Canada (IIHF tournament not the olympics.) He's young, but clearly going to be one of the best players in the NHL is a few years, if not now.

Roberto Luongo - You could write a whole book about this future Hall of Famer. He's a goalie, and one of the best of all time. He's a shocking 37 years old (but not even the oldest player on the Panthers), but still puts up All star level stats every year. It's funny, he was on the Panthers from 2000-06, traded, played for a different team (the Vancouver Canucks), and was traded back to the Panthers in 2014 lol.

Jaromir Jagr - Luongo and Ekblad may be future Hockey Hall of Famers, but Jagr is going to be a hockey LEGEND. At 44 years old, he still consistently puts up 20+ goals a season, which is nothing to sneeze at. He is third in NHL history for career goals (749) , 6th for assists (1,119), 3rd for total points (1,868 and could get to 2nd easily, needs like 20 more, also points is goals + assists), and is 8th in the NHL for games played (1,629). While he hasn't been a Panther his whole career (he's been on 9 different NHL teams), he's truly amazing to watch.

Some other players to watch for are: Reilly Smith (RW), Nick Bjugstad (C), Aleksander Barkov (C), James Reimer (G), and Keith Yandle (D).

send me one (and maybe a link to watch it online bc i have no cable) i wanted to get into hockey for a while (at first to impress a girl............) and im in southeast us

OK so there's a few teams in southeast USA, so I'm gonna list a few and I want you to pick 1 or 2 closest to you (I'm just gonna do NHL since's it's easiest to watch online).

-Florida Panthers (Sunrise, Florida)
-Tampa Bay Lightning (Tampa Bay, Florida)
-Carolina Hurricanes (Raleigh, North Carolina)
-Washington Capitals (Washington D.C.)
-Nashville Predators (Nashville, Tennessee)
-Dallas Stars (Dallas, Texas)

Most games are also on public TV so you should be able to watch without cable.

Also, do you know this girl's favorite team? I could give you that one.

Also also, trust me bro, if this girl is into hockey players you might not want her. Puck bunnies are always looking to whack some hockey player jimmies

the florida panthers are close to where i grew up and but tampa bay is closer to my uni hmm. my top 1 would be florida panthers since i grew up hearing about them

excellent choice, the Panthers have always had a soft spot in my heart. Write up to follow.

Ok so you're a semi fan, which is cool. But, you could be a SUPER FAN.

OK so not gonna lie, Hockey is not very popular in the south. The preds are probably the only major team in the Tennessee area, with a few "professional league" teams around the area. There is a D1 hockey team in Alabama (University of Alabama in Huntsville) who you could follow, but you probably dont wanna drive and chances are none of their games are on TV lol.

The Nashville Predators joined the NHL in 1998, so they're relatively new (still older than the majority of users on this website tho). They've only made the playoffs 3 times, but 2 of those have been the last two years, and they've become an extremely good team. Part of the reason for that is their goalie, who is regarded as one of the best goalies in the world, Pekka Rinne. Pekka is a freak from Finland, who despite being on a pretty terrible team for most of his career, managed to put up amazing numbers in terms of saves and wins. Nashville also has the nickname "Smashville" due to their HUGE defenders and rough style of play. Former captain Shea Weber (who is 6'4 btw), can shoot the puck at 108.5 MPH (only the 2nd fastest in the NHL btw, fastest is 108.8 held by Boston's captain Zdeno Chara), absolutely dominated the ice with his size. He was recently traded for defender P.K. Subban, who is considered one of the best players in the NHL, and is also black (https://tinyurl.com/zvedvx8). Despite being a traditionally defensive team, they have some young offensive talent in the works. Ryan Johansen, James Neal, and Filip Forsberg are all players to watch.

Best College (D1) hockey team in the US, let alone Boston (F*ck Boston College btw)

I have a bunch more favorites and second favorites, but I'll keep it with these two for now. I'll go more in depth for my choice for your guys (brief history, rivals, how the team is doing currently, success of the team, notable players). So please post away!
