enigma popstar is fun she wear burqa for fashion

while it saddens me that she's eschewed some of her more powerful singing in exchange for artistic freedom, blaring club cadence, and well, fun (i guess), you really have to give credit to lady gaga for continuing to do her own thing and marketing the product for airplay. on ARTPOP, she exhibits a healthily unorthodox approach to pop songwriting, with multiple breakdowns and pre-choruses ("venus"), all the while maintaining her trademark wacky intonation and delivery on the actual choruses. occasionally she runs into the problem of trying to dabble in one-too-many styles (hip-hop cut "jewels n' drugs" is absolutely exhausting to get through) but compensates by aiming for sheer catchiness. reading some of the choruses on this album aloud, i felt like i was developing a speech impediment, but this is lady gaga we are talking about. she could probably turn a poorly translated collection of uzbek nursery rhymes into a top 40 earworm. many of the songs are audaciously self-referential (eponymous cut "ARTPOP" being the most significant) and build themselves on semiotic flair. these references are woven into lyrics that i couldn't immediately remark on because of how obnoxious the production could be at times. the synths and house tendencies on this album pretty much engulf her vocals here and there which is frustrating because i like hearing her voice and those club groove breaks just water everything down. thank you for turning me camp gay for 59 minutes and 4 seconds, cory.

very jazzy psych rock. a little bit of pink floyd influence in there? now normally i hate bands with extensive guitar jams, but the instrumentation was varied and atmospheric enough to hook me (i really enjoyed the saxophone parts). this is real meditative music; shit u zen out to. there's power in it, too. i was put in a semi-trance-like-state but i felt oddly motivated. pretty cool stuff.

i'm doing metropolis pt. 1 first

i like this! there's some real modesty to it. for their first release(?), i'm especially impressed that they managed to nail down such a big sound without overwhelming the listener. compared to other EDM i've listened to, this EP rewards you with more than the short-lived bliss of a drop. there's almost a mythology behind each track here; small bits of a world not fully realized but still captivating enough to hold your curiosity. the synth choices and pacing are fantastic. it's rhythmically diverse; drops aren't predictable nor are there hackneyed buildups. i'm more in favor of calling this synthpop than EDM and i guess it's to the m machine's benefit that they can't be pigeonholed. cheers.
