In 2007 I simultaneously became a vegan and attended a massage therapy intensive training in California. I fell in love with learning about the body and what is needed in order for all systems to function in dynamic harmony. I began my holistic journey toward health and wellness, learning left-and-right about nutrition, and altering my lifestyle to fit the needs of my body, mind, and soul. I arrived at Evergreen in 2008, studying Health Psychology and the relationship between human development and humanities. I went on to take the program Food, Health, and Sustainability, where I realized my love for food politics. I finished the year with an emphasis on the role language has played in the evolution of the human mind. I took a class that explored both the science and spirituality of food and eating; and later, a class on the psychology of success. From there, I co-directed and produced The Vagina Monologues on campus, while writing the first act of my own musical satire about the food system in the United States. I spent the rest of 2010 studying the facets of multiple Complementary and Alternative medical modalities, and deepening my understanding and appreciation of neuroplasticity. I began 2011 as the intern for a local Holistic Nutrition Counselor, learning the ins-and-outs of her business model and pinpointing the pros and cons of that model. From April through June I traveled throughout Chile, witnessing the effects that our country has on their food system.
