Coup - Forum Edition

Welcome to the Game of Coup!

You are head of a family in an Italian city-state, a city run by a weak and corrupt court. You need to manipulate, bluff, and bribe your way to power. Your object is to destroy the influence of all the other families, forcing them into exile. Only one family will survive...

How to Play

Participating players will receive two roles at random from me, the host as well as start off with two coins. Possible roles are: Assassin, Contessa, Duke, Captain, and Ambassador. Each roles can perform specific actions:

Assassin: For three coins, an assassin can choose to kill any player. A successful murder will reveal whatever role that player decides to reveal. An assassin can be blocked by a contessa or a challenge. Ends turn if blocked by a contessa and loses three coins.

Contessa: Can block any assassination attempt towards them. Can be blocked by a challenge.

Duke: Instead of taking either one coin for income or two coins for foreign aid, a duke can make an action of getting three coins. Can block others from taking foreign aid. Can be blocked by a challenge.

Captain: Choose a person to steal two coins from. Cannot steal from another captain or an ambassador. Can be blocked by a challenge. Ends turn if blocked by another captain or ambassador until next turn.

Ambassador: Can choose to take an action of switching his roles out for new ones that have not been revealed by another player. If the Ambassador wishes to not switch, he can keep his roles and ends his turn.

Actions are not final until the host announces it. In between that, players have the time to negotiate their potential demise with another player.

Note: If you choose to play safe on your turn and not challenge any form of block or action, you cannot make another action.

Coup

There is a mandatory action of "Coup'ing" someone. What this means is, once a player hits 7 coins, they are allowed to coup someone. Coup'ing is an action that cannot be blocked or challenged, so if a player is coup'd, they must surrender a role and reveal it. If they are coup'd twice, they are out of the game. If a player hits 10 or over in their current turn, the next turn, the player must coup. No other action can be taken.

FAQs

Q: Are all incorrectly challenged roles revealed?

A: Yes.

Q: When is a role not revealed?

A: If a role was not challenged, your role will remain a secret. All incorrectly challenged cards (Player A is incorrect about Player B not being X role) are revealed and put back as options to draw from as either ambassador or in a regular draw after being forced to reveal.

Q: What is a challenge?

A: A challenge is an action any player can take against another player claiming a certain role. If player X insists that player Y is not an assassin and player Y is, in fact, not an assassin, his role is revealed by the host and he is left with one other card. His turn ends.

Q: How does assassin work?

A: Three coins used to assassinate someone. You can be blocked by a contessa. You can challenge a contessa claim, but if you do and if the player claiming contessa is contessa, then you lose your three coins and one of your roles must be revealed. If you are challenged, you reveal your card and your assassination still goes through. The player must reveal a role on top of being assassinated, therefore, he is out of the game. Both of the player's roles are revealed.

Q: How many people can be a particular role?

A: There are a maximum of three copies of each role. Roles will not be revealed unless challenged or assassinated.

Q: Do you have to be a certain role to perform an action?

A: Not at all. This is a game of deception. Bluffing is key to winning. Be careful though, if you're challenged and you are not said role, you will lose that role and be forced to reveal one of your roles.

Q: What actions can you perform without being challenged?

A: Income and foreign aid. Income allows you to take one coin while foreign aid allows you to take two coins. Be advised that only one action per turn.

Q: What if an assassin assassinates someone then gets challenged incorrectly?

A: If that occurs, the player who challenged loses both cards: one to assassination and another to incorrectly challenging. They are out of the game. After that, assassins surrenders his role and is given a new one at random.

(Hi guys. I have a suggestion: Forums do notify you of posts, so I ask this: For next trial game, would you prefer to use Discord, Skype, or something similar to the sort for this? So you know when it's your turn.)
