Coup - Forum Edition

deletedabout 7 years

Welcome to the Game of Coup!

You are head of a family in an Italian city-state, a city run by a weak and corrupt court. You need to manipulate, bluff, and bribe your way to power. Your object is to destroy the influence of all the other families, forcing them into exile. Only one family will survive...

How to Play

Participating players will receive two roles at random from me, the host as well as start off with two coins. Possible roles are: Assassin, Contessa, Duke, Captain, and Ambassador. Each roles can perform specific actions:

Assassin: For three coins, an assassin can choose to kill any player. A successful murder will reveal whatever role that player decides to reveal. An assassin can be blocked by a contessa or a challenge. Ends turn if blocked by a contessa and loses three coins.

Contessa: Can block any assassination attempt towards them. Can be blocked by a challenge.

Duke: Instead of taking either one coin for income or two coins for foreign aid, a duke can make an action of getting three coins. Can block others from taking foreign aid. Can be blocked by a challenge.

Captain: Choose a person to steal two coins from. Cannot steal from another captain or an ambassador. Can be blocked by a challenge. Ends turn if blocked by another captain or ambassador until next turn.

Ambassador: Can choose to take an action of switching his roles out for new ones that have not been revealed by another player. If the Ambassador wishes to not switch, he can keep his roles and ends his turn.

Actions are not final until the host announces it. In between that, players have the time to negotiate their potential demise with another player.

Note: If you choose to play safe on your turn and not challenge any form of block or action, you cannot make another action.

Coup

There is a mandatory action of "Coup'ing" someone. What this means is, once a player hits 7 coins, they are allowed to coup someone. Coup'ing is an action that cannot be blocked or challenged, so if a player is coup'd, they must surrender a role and reveal it. If they are coup'd twice, they are out of the game. If a player hits 10 or over in their current turn, the next turn, the player must coup. No other action can be taken.

FAQs

Q: Are all incorrectly challenged roles revealed?

A: Yes.

Q: When is a role not revealed?

A: If a role was not challenged, your role will remain a secret. All incorrectly challenged cards (Player A is incorrect about Player B not being X role) are revealed and put back as options to draw from as either ambassador or in a regular draw after being forced to reveal.

Q: What is a challenge?

A: A challenge is an action any player can take against another player claiming a certain role. If player X insists that player Y is not an assassin and player Y is, in fact, not an assassin, his role is revealed by the host and he is left with one other card. His turn ends.

Q: How does assassin work?

A: Three coins used to assassinate someone. You can be blocked by a contessa. You can challenge a contessa claim, but if you do and if the player claiming contessa is contessa, then you lose your three coins and one of your roles must be revealed. If you are challenged, you reveal your card and your assassination still goes through. The player must reveal a role on top of being assassinated, therefore, he is out of the game. Both of the player's roles are revealed.

Q: How many people can be a particular role?

A: There are a maximum of three copies of each role. Roles will not be revealed unless challenged or assassinated.

Q: Do you have to be a certain role to perform an action?

A: Not at all. This is a game of deception. Bluffing is key to winning. Be careful though, if you're challenged and you are not said role, you will lose that role and be forced to reveal one of your roles.

Q: What actions can you perform without being challenged?

A: Income and foreign aid. Income allows you to take one coin while foreign aid allows you to take two coins. Be advised that only one action per turn.

Q: What if an assassin assassinates someone then gets challenged incorrectly?

A: If that occurs, the player who challenged loses both cards: one to assassination and another to incorrectly challenging. They are out of the game. After that, assassins surrenders his role and is given a new one at random.

The rules I stated are the same as the rules of the original Coup. I Googled them. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/131357/coup

Roles will be revealed if they are caught bluffing and if they have to prove themselves.

1 duke
2 contessa
3 captain
4 assassin
5 ambassador

If I role a 1, 1 is duke. If three ones are rolled, duke is no longer going to be distributed

Note: If Player X has a character in question and chooses to reveal it to prove their legitimacy, the challenger, Player Y, loses a role of their choosing, PMs me the role they decided to surrender, then that role is, once again, usable by ambassadors.

I think having lost cards revealed adds good strategy to the game, and makes it less about guessing. The greatest number of cards you can have revealed is 10, that leaves 5 left. Sure, if your opponent has duke and you have contessa, you might not be able to bluff duke if they're all revealed, but you could still win by bluffing captain or assassin.

sorry, how will a 1-5 die roll be effectively used to decide what card is next? Say, if there were 3 contessas, 2 dukes, and 1 captain left in the deck? Do you just mean it's used to order the deck in the beginning of the game?

Someone with a contessa won't be able to win against someone who has duke. Three coins every round without being to block or do anything is unfair. At least with anonymity, people will have to challenge a role at some point, but through either process of elimination or just reading in between the lines for each player's claim.

Say, for example, if everyone does reveal their cards, then it won't be fun to other players. They'll never be able to win a 1v1 against another person because they'll know they're bluffing.

The reason I did it this way was to avoid people from "counting cards"

Yes probability will be used and yes, it sill be a die roll. I labled roles from 1-5. That is how I determined it.

I made it so that if you are assassinated or coup'd, your role will not be revealed. If you are challenged and you are, indeed, not what you claimed to have been, you will not reveal your card. You will just surrender your card and remain with just one. If you are what you say you are, you card will be revealed (announced by the host) and you will be given a new role, but the card player X has to surrender due to incorrect judgement will not be revealed.

How can someone be out of the game and have none of their cards revealed? Isn't each card you lose placed faced up on the table?

Also, will cards drawn mid-game (from ambassador, etc) be based on probability, from the cards remaining in the deck? Will you be using a number generator or something?

As many rounds as people can play or want to play. All six players must be available, so you can discuss amongst yourselves when you guys would like to play rounds.

Note: Players that are participating need to be advised that you *cannot * take longer than five minutes to perform an action and no longer than three minutes to decide whether or not you'd like to challenge. The only time it can exceed those limits is if you're trying to figure out if:

A) they're bluffing

B) discussing in-game related possibilities with others.

An example can be if someone is out of the game, but none of their cards were revealed, yet four people are still claiming duke...it's up to you (and if you want help from others) to decide who's lying and how many players are lying.

How many rounds will be played in 30 days?

I'm going to assign roles then the rules are the same as the actual game. Instead of distributing cards, I'll assign two roles at random to each player. I mentioned that in the OP, but tl;dr :(
