Coup - Forum Edition

Welcome to the Game of Coup!

You are head of a family in an Italian city-state, a city run by a weak and corrupt court. You need to manipulate, bluff, and bribe your way to power. Your object is to destroy the influence of all the other families, forcing them into exile. Only one family will survive...

How to Play

Participating players will receive two roles at random from me, the host as well as start off with two coins. Possible roles are: Assassin, Contessa, Duke, Captain, and Ambassador. Each roles can perform specific actions:

Assassin: For three coins, an assassin can choose to kill any player. A successful murder will reveal whatever role that player decides to reveal. An assassin can be blocked by a contessa or a challenge. Ends turn if blocked by a contessa and loses three coins.

Contessa: Can block any assassination attempt towards them. Can be blocked by a challenge.

Duke: Instead of taking either one coin for income or two coins for foreign aid, a duke can make an action of getting three coins. Can block others from taking foreign aid. Can be blocked by a challenge.

Captain: Choose a person to steal two coins from. Cannot steal from another captain or an ambassador. Can be blocked by a challenge. Ends turn if blocked by another captain or ambassador until next turn.

Ambassador: Can choose to take an action of switching his roles out for new ones that have not been revealed by another player. If the Ambassador wishes to not switch, he can keep his roles and ends his turn.

Actions are not final until the host announces it. In between that, players have the time to negotiate their potential demise with another player.

Note: If you choose to play safe on your turn and not challenge any form of block or action, you cannot make another action.

Coup

There is a mandatory action of "Coup'ing" someone. What this means is, once a player hits 7 coins, they are allowed to coup someone. Coup'ing is an action that cannot be blocked or challenged, so if a player is coup'd, they must surrender a role and reveal it. If they are coup'd twice, they are out of the game. If a player hits 10 or over in their current turn, the next turn, the player must coup. No other action can be taken.

FAQs

Q: Are all incorrectly challenged roles revealed?

A: Yes.

Q: When is a role not revealed?

A: If a role was not challenged, your role will remain a secret. All incorrectly challenged cards (Player A is incorrect about Player B not being X role) are revealed and put back as options to draw from as either ambassador or in a regular draw after being forced to reveal.

Q: What is a challenge?

A: A challenge is an action any player can take against another player claiming a certain role. If player X insists that player Y is not an assassin and player Y is, in fact, not an assassin, his role is revealed by the host and he is left with one other card. His turn ends.

Q: How does assassin work?

A: Three coins used to assassinate someone. You can be blocked by a contessa. You can challenge a contessa claim, but if you do and if the player claiming contessa is contessa, then you lose your three coins and one of your roles must be revealed. If you are challenged, you reveal your card and your assassination still goes through. The player must reveal a role on top of being assassinated, therefore, he is out of the game. Both of the player's roles are revealed.

Q: How many people can be a particular role?

A: There are a maximum of three copies of each role. Roles will not be revealed unless challenged or assassinated.

Q: Do you have to be a certain role to perform an action?

A: Not at all. This is a game of deception. Bluffing is key to winning. Be careful though, if you're challenged and you are not said role, you will lose that role and be forced to reveal one of your roles.

Q: What actions can you perform without being challenged?

A: Income and foreign aid. Income allows you to take one coin while foreign aid allows you to take two coins. Be advised that only one action per turn.

Q: What if an assassin assassinates someone then gets challenged incorrectly?

A: If that occurs, the player who challenged loses both cards: one to assassination and another to incorrectly challenging. They are out of the game. After that, assassins surrenders his role and is given a new one at random.

I used random numbers.

Yea that works
deletedabout 7 years
I just need to understand. If that's what you'd like so it'd be better? Just let me know
deletedabout 7 years
I see nothing difference. Do you mean giving each role 0-2 3-4 5-7 8-10 11-13 instead

I know what a random variable is... I hope you see the difference between "everything is random" and "there is randonmess in this game, but that doesn't mean every outcome is a 50/50 chance". Thanks for being adaptable.

If that's what you like, then no problem.

Or, Google:

In both probability and statistics, random variable, random quantity, aleatory variable, or stochastic variable is a variable whose possible values are numerical outcomes of a random phenomenon.

that's like saying there should be a 1/4 chance i flip blue in a classic mafia game, because the 4 roles are blue, maf, cop, doc

if you want it to be like the real game, I'd suggest you use https://www.random.org/strings/?num=1&len=15&digits=on&unique=on&format=html&rnd=new, with 0-1 being ambassador, 2-3 being assassin, etc.

you would "deal out" the first ten digits/cards to people, then the last 5 would be the deck. If you have to reshuffle the deck, just generate a new string and use the same method.

Okay:

Odds of me getting a duke and a contessa in a 3 contessa 1 duke draw is low, but I can still get a duke.

asdfg "probability is random" is not a logical response to what i said

Game will start with 5 players if no 6th is chosen at 5:30PM (17:30) EST

ugh w/ my current circadian rhythm i only start playing around 8-11PM EST earliest
could make an exception on friday, but won't do it every day
thought it'd be like 1 day per turn or smth, but apparently i was wrong, someone can take my place plz

apologies.
deletedabout 7 years
One more hour if I'm correct?

Also, cards that are assassinated are revealed, I apologize.

If an assassin is challenged and they are assassin, you are automatically out of the game because Assassin kills one influence and then you have to surrender the other. Both cards must be facing up (revealed)
deletedabout 7 years
If you do have the character in question and choose to reveal it, the opponent loses an influence, then you shuffle that character into the deck and draw a new one, perhaps getting the same character again and perhaps not.

Player X has a character in question and chooses to reveal it, Player Y loses an influence. Player X shuffles his revealed card back into the deck, Player Y just keeps his card faced up and revealed.
deletedabout 7 years
that character's action automatically succeeds unless an opponent challenges you. In this case, if you can't (or don't) reveal the appropriate character, you lose an influence, turning one of your characters face-up. Face-up characters cannot be used, and if both of your characters are face-up, you're out of the game.

Basically means if you guess incorrectly, you show your card and it can't be used.

Yes, but probability is random. You can have that 1% chance that you'll get Contessa and Duke instead of Contessa and Contessa.

Petite I don't think we're on the same page.... I'm saying if only these cards are in the deck, in the middle of the game:

3 contessas
1 duke

it should be more likely that the next player to draw, draws a contessa instead of a duke. According to what you've described, it seems like they would be equally likely to "draw" a contessa and a duke, because both roles are in the game.

I'm fairly sure the rules that come with the card game also state that you reveal a card when you're assassinated successfully or couped - the link you provided doesn't state either way.

http://upload.snakesandlattes.com/rules/c/CoupTheResistance.pdf states that you reveal the card.

Three Contessas
Three Dukes
Three Captains
Three Assassins
Three Ambassadors

Roles are 1-5 on a die. If I role 1 and 3 for Player A, they get Duke and Captain.

3 contessas
2 dukes
2 captains
3 assassins
3 ambassadors

Roles are still numbered 1-5. Not cards. The roles itself.
about 7 years
That doesn't seem like real probability.... If there are 3 contessas and 1 duke in the deck, contessa is 3 times as likely to be drawn as duke, but duke is going to be "distributed" equally as often on that draw?

Sorry, one last thing then I'll stop posting:

Roles revealed due to bluff are not reusable. Cards revealed to prove legitimacy are reusable by ambassadors. Any one can claim ambassador, so use revealed cards to your advantage as well as a person's replies to deduct whether they're bluffing or not to challenge them.
